Limburger Vlaai
(Filled Pastry)
A very special treat.
My Uncle who lived in Limburg showed me how to make it.
Ingredients:
250 grams plain flour.
50 grams canola margarine.
1/2 cup of milk.
50 grams castor sugar.
1 egg.
1 Packet of yeast.
Method:
1 Make pastry. Place it in a bowl and cover with a tea towel.
2 Let it rise for half an hour in a warm place over a bowl of
warm water.
3 Grease 2 x 20 or 25 cm tins
4 Roll out pastry and divide into four portions
5 Line the tins with the pastry. Fill them with stewed fruit
or special Vlaai fruit (available in tins in gourmet stores)
6 Decorate with criss-crosses of pastry on top of the Vlaais.
7 Preheat the oven to 300F or 150 C.
8 Cook for 20 minutes
9 Sprinkle sugar on top and cook for 10 minutes more.
